Green Living: You CAN Make a Difference To The Planet

Green living means making a positive difference to the environment and reducing your negative impact. Make some small lifestyle changes to get the ball rolling, encourage others to do the same, and we will be helping the planet as well as ourselves. It isn’t difficult to put these suggestions for green living into practice for yourself. Green living: making lifestyle choices with the health of the environment in mind.

Increased carbon levels in the atmosphere is believed to contribute to global warming, so a green living way of life needs to address this as well as reducing waste, the use of natural resources and toxins in the air and water. Many green strategies help you as well as the environment; you save money and your health.

There are several steps that you can take to reduce the volume of carbon emissions that come from burning fossil fuels. Find other ways to travel instead of jumping in your car. It isn’t too hard to change to using public transport or car pooling to work. You could always walk or cycle to your destination. You are working towards better health for yourself and the environment.

Help to save the environment by swapping the incandescent light bulbs in your home for compact fluorescent ones that need less power to light. The CFLs can reduce energy consumption 70% and they last longer than traditional bulbs. Your power bills will be dramatically reduced when you replace all your incandescent light bulbs; replacing just five will save you about $50? Switch all appliances off at the socket when they are not being used.

Plants take carbon out of the air and store it in the soil, so eat more fruit and vegetables than meat. Again, you are helping the environment but you are also living a healthier lifestyle. Cattle are detrimental to the environment by compacting the soil and producing methane gas. Include more lean white meat, like chicken and fish, in your diet, in place of regular large helpings of red meat.

Reduce your environmental footprint by putting the three Rs into place – reduce, reuse and recycle. Reducing your dependence on plastics in the home helps the environment by reducing the toxins that are produced by their manufacture. Find new ways to reuse the plastic supermarket bags before you have to throw them out. Stop and think before you print out an email, memo or article to try and reduce paper use. Think creatively to find additional uses for plastic containers, packaging and bottles.

Water is a precious resource so cut down on how much you use. Have shorter showers by reducing the time under the water by only 2 minutes and save water. Turning taps on full-force wastes a lot of water, as you can’t use this high volume. Reuse washing machine water on the garden. Try alternative ways to heat and cool your home like solar power, blinds that regulate the temperature and plants around the house to control temperatures.

These few strategies will get you started on making changes that will benefit the environment. Work on the issue as a family, because environmental problems affect us all.
