Learning Correct Coney Care Is Needed in Owning a Rabbit

Rabbits may be small in stature, but they have a lot of special needs and requirements that differ from the normal type of pets that we are accustomed to. If it is in your mind to have a rabbit for a pet, the need to take the steps to learn how to take care of one first. To get you started, here are some things you should learn:

Hutch

Ideally, your rabbit’s cage should be at least 4 times larger than your rabbit, but bigger is always better especially if it will spend most of its time inside the cage. The floor of the cage should always be solid. Many rabbit cages are still made with wire floors with pull out pans underneath because it can be cleaned easily, but cages of this type are uncomfortable and my cause sores. If the cage you have has a wire floor, cover it with sisal mats, grass or a piece of wood.

Diet

You need to make sure that you have a pretty much unlimited supply of grass hay for feed such as brome or timothy. Grass hay helps to ensure that your rabbit stays healthy by keeping its intestinal tract clean. You will also need to keep a supply of quality rabbit pellets on hand. You should feed younger rabbits (younger than six months) pellets that contain a minimum of 8% fiber and approximately 15 to 19% protein. You are also going to need to feed your rabbit things such as collard greens, carrots tops, different types of lettuce, turnip greens, and any other type of dark leafy green vegetable that might come to mind. You need to give your rabbit a minimum of 2 cups leafy green vegetables for every 6 pounds that it weighs. Give your rabbit a clean and fresh supply of water at all times.

Litter Box Training

For the most part, rabbits have a tendency to use one part of its cage for its toilet. When your rabbit decides which area of its cage it wants to use, you need to fill that area with pelleted newspaper litter, or some type of hay. You need to make sure that you claim it’s litter box each and every day to keep the odors down.

Cage Maintenance

Take the time to clean your rabbits cage a minimum of one time a week. When you are cleaning its cage you need to put your rabbit in a safe area. Make sure that you sweep the floor in the cage and remove anything that is solid waste. Use soap and warm water when scrubbing the cage’s floor.

Handling

Improper handling of your rabbit can cause injury. Make sure that you don’t never pick up a rabbit by using its ears. The way to pick up your rabbit safely, is to use one hand to give its front leg support and the other hand it to give its back legs support.
